BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC)- A Fairfield man has been charged
with kidnapping a woman in Birmingham, police announced Monday.
Adarius Williams, a 24-year-old from Fairfield,
was taken into custody Saturday morning after officials attempted to make
contact with him for several hours. Officers eventually used gas to draw
Williams out. He has been charged with kidnapping and other misdemeanor
charges.
Police began investigating the
incident as a domestic violence case. The victim in the case is a 23-year-old female, BPD spokesperson Captain Henry Irby said in a release.
West Precinct officers responded to a residence in the 1000 block of Elm Street Southwest around 11:44 p.m. Friday,
Aug. 24. Witnesses described hearing gunshots and told officers that a female was
being held inside the residence and the suspect would not let her leave.
The officers were unsuccessful in
making contact with the suspect inside the residence, so around 2 a.m. the
Tactical Unit was called to the scene. The Tactical Unit negotiators were
unable to make contact with the suspect as well.
Around 6 a.m. Saturday, officials
deployed gas inside the home as negotiators continued to try to make contact
with the suspect. Birmingham police report that the female victim exited the
residence at 6:25 a.m. and the suspect followed closely behind at 6:27 a.m.
Williams was taken into custody
without incident and is being held in the Jefferson County Jail on a $200,000
bond for the kidnapping charge. His other misdemeanor charges have a combined
bond of more than $2,600.
Police say there were no reported
injuries in the case.
