BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC)- The Alabama Bureau of Investigation is looking into a shooting that involved Birmingham police officers early Sunday morning. One man was killed in the incident.

It happened in an area that has been problematic for the city for years. Several murders have occurred outside some of Birmingham's nightclubs and this latest homicide is no different.

Around 2 .m. Sunday morning, police say an officer saw suspects in a car shooting at a man on 17th Street North. That officer and a security guard shot back at the suspects who managed to get away. Their car was later found on 1st Avenue North.

Two people were taken into custody as they tried to leave in another car that was there to pick them up.

The victim, Oscar Johnson, was taken to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead soon after he arrived. Club Promoter Devon Wells saw Johnson lying on the ground.

"I walk around to go to the driver door, there's a bullet in the back of my window and a body in front of my car," said Wells.

"We've talked to clubs in the area. Given them the opportunity to clean up their act and make sure they have a safe environment for patrons to go visit," said Birmingham Councilman Johnathan Austin.

Austin says he is not sure what the solution is to fix the problem, but says the city will continue to communicate with each club and do their best to target those that pose a serious problem.
