GBHS taking in Tuscaloosa animals, reducing adoption fees | News
With an influx of animals and a serious lack of volunteers, the Tuscaloosa Metro Animal Shelter was forced to close its doors Thursday, according to its Facebook page.
To help them out, the Greater Birmingham Humane Society is stepping in, taking the overflow of animals to their location and reducing adoption fees.
Starting Friday through the end of June, dogs four months and older will be available for a fee of only $45 (dog adoption fees normally range from $75 to $150) and cats and kittens of all ages will be available for a fee of $60 (cats also range from $75 to $150).
Hopefully the reduced fees will make room for the Tuscaloosa animals GBHS will be picking up on Monday. The pets are either owner surrendered or have stray holds that have expired.
“Following the April 27th tornadoes, we have seen a sharp increase in the homeless pet population of central Alabama, “ GBHS Executive Director Jacque Meyer said in a release. “Now is the time for our community to step up and help us find these animals home. We will do anything we can to support shelters that have been affected by these devastating storms.”
The Tuscaloosa animals will be spayed or neutered, and placed for adoption or transported out by one of GBHS’ transport partners and place in their adoption programs.
The Tuscaloosa Metro Animal Shelter is still asking for volunteers so they will not have to continue turning away animals due to the lack of workers. Call 205-752-9101 or visit them at 3140 35th St. in Tuscaloosa to help.
Visit ghbs.org/adopt to see the animals available for adoption at GBHS or visit the shelter at 300 Snow Dr. in Birmingham.
